Although the population does not quite reach 3,000 residents, don’t let the small size of Osseo fool you. The town did not escape the notice of Henry W. Longfellow when he was writing his poem The Song of Hiawatha, and it should not escape yours either. The name of the town comes from the Ojibwe word waaseyaa, which is loosely translated to mean “there is light,” but others prefer the meaning “son of the evening star” to describe the name of the town. With this rich heritage, perhaps it’s time to take another look at what Osseo has to offer today. Local events take center stage in the annual life of the municipality, and many of them are musical. Concerts in the Park draw listeners to the bandshell in the northeast corner of Boerboom Park on Tuesday evenings in the summer months of June, July, and August. Music is followed by a public movie screening, making these concerts a hub of town life in the summer and a fond memory during the frigid Minnesota winters, as well. None can miss the Osseo Marching Band Festival on the Saturday of the last full weekend of June each year. Drawing participants from Minnesota and Wisconsin, this event hosts an award ceremony that is free to the public and a bombastic way to kick off the summer. The Osseo Lions Club hosts “Lions Roar” the weekend after Labor Day each year, a street festival with food stalls, a carnival in the parking lots near Central Avenue and 3rd Street, and a parade extending from Sipe’s Park to the high school. These events guide the annual calendar from one celebration to the next, reminding Osseo residents what makes their town so special.
